Let's talk about Heroes in Project Cosmos!
We’ve talked about the worlds that players will be exploring, and how they’re bite-sized experiences that throw different things at players every time they jump in. That’s a lot of new challenges for players to overcome, and we always knew that Project Cosmos would need to give players more power to accommodate.
This might be controversial, but I think the survival crafting genre has given players enough options for punching trees and crafting their first stone hammer. We want players to land on our worlds with a bit more they can do right from the start. In particular, we want players to start each world with a focus they’ve already deliberately chosen.
Each of the heroes in Project Cosmos specialize in Exploring, Fighting, or Building. Explorers have extra movement tools and tricks, giving them the ability to get to every interesting corner of the map, and reach rare treasures that other players would struggle to discover. In combat, they often excel at mobility as well as hit and run approaches, but don’t love to fight the heaviest targets, or get trapped in a massive mob of monsters.
Fighters, as you might expect, excel at wading into the toughest fights, whether that’s picking a fight with the strongest monsters that wander the world, or diving deep into hostile dungeons filled with dangerous enemies. Builders - you’ll never guess - are excellent at getting the base up and running, but also keeping it protected from the dangerous creatures that arrive each night. Building-focused heroes will also be able to craft and build things only they have access to, so that each builder unlocks something special in the base for the whole team.
It’s also worth mentioning that no character is capable only in their primary focus. Every Fighter has some extra skills when it comes to building or exploration, and so on for each character. This means that every pair of characters have something they can do together, and no matter which ones your team chooses, it’s very likely that you’ll have a few approaches to any situation. That allows Project Cosmos to avoid mandating specific characters and roles when players build their team.
This also helps tremendously when friends get together to start a world. Not only are there no mandatory roles, but each character makes a clear statement. If I choose Mycelia, our enchanted mushroom builder, I’m telling my friends that I’m going to be in our base, making it safe and crafting wondrous items. If I pick Cirrae, our storm magic wielding explorer, I tell my friends that I’ll be dashing to every corner of the world and bringing back hidden treasures to share with my team. Our hero-based approach makes it easier for friends to coordinate and have a great time together, and solve some of the most challenging communication issues that come up in Survival Crafting games.
We’re excited to talk more about our individual heroes, and we’ll be doing some deep dives on individual characters soon. If you want to ask about any of the characters we’ve shown, or vote for the character you want to hear about first, come join us on Discord! https://discord.gg/projectcosmos
